Douglas Blackmore

Douglas Blackmore started The Writing because of his vision to bring together a team of professional journalists, editors and educators to address clients’ writing, editing and educational concerns. He has been an educator since 1971. Douglas’ career has included teaching Special Education, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, and Learning Support in Nova Scotia and Quebec, Canada, and at the International School of Basel, Switzerland. Douglas has designed curriculum, spoken to large gatherings of educators and provided consultation on a variety of educational issues. Douglas has traveled extensively and brings communications skills and international experience to The Writing

Valerie Mansour

Valerie Mansour is an award-winning journalist, researcher and editor. She has been a communications consultant, and has written and edited for government, academic, community and corporate clients. Her work has included reporting for The Toronto Star; features for such publications as Maclean’s, Atlantic Insight and East Coast Living; and radio documentaries for CBC. Valerie has also been a researcher and writer for numerous television documentary series and films. She currently reviews restaurants and cookbooks. Valerie is a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada and Canadian Journalists for Free Expression. She organized and edited a book about Guatemala called Weaving Relationships. Valerie was the administrator for the Nova Scotia English as a Second Language network and has international experience, having traveled and worked abroad.

Sharon Fraser

Sharon Fraser has been editor of a number of publications, ranging in diversity from general interest to the commercial fishing industry to social housing to progressive news and current affairs. She has written for the major newspapers and magazines across the country. She has edited an acclaimed collection of essays by Ray Guy and has contributed a chapter to a book on PEI's Fixed Link. David Swick

David Swick is an award-winning journalist and teacher. He has worked in a variety of media, including radio, magazines, television, and, particularly, newspapers where he wrote and edited for over 20 years. His work includes national CBC Radio documentaries from Cuba, Mexico, and El Salvador. David is also the author of a book, Thunder and Ocean -- a look at the Buddhist community that settled in eastern Canada. He teaches journalism ethics at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Recent magazine interviews include Joan Didion, Ani DiFranco, Eve Ensler, and Alice Walker. David has traveled throughout Central and South America, as well as Europe.

Margo Wheaton

Margo Wheaton lives in Halifax where she graduated from Dalhousie University with a Master’s degree in English. She has an extensive background in the fields of writing, editing and research and has worked with clients in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Projects include creating handbooks and workbooks, speeches, research and project reports, feature articles, web content, funding proposals, annual reports, President’s messages, newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, press releases and other promotional and instructional materials.

Margo is a member of the Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) and the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia. Her essays, reviews and poetry have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Coast and in literary magazines across the country. Margo also has experience teaching writing and literacy skills and has instructed adults one-on-one as well as in workshops and classroom settings.

Faez Bakalian

Faez Bakalian obtained a Ph.D. in oceanography and atmospheric science in 2005 and a BS in physics and astronomy in 1997. He has a multi-disciplinary background in the sciences, and has been extensively involved in both education and research. He has taught science and math courses at various universities, published in highly reputable scientific journals, taken part in a NASA peer review panel, and secured grant funding from government organizations. He has a keen ability for editing and polishing scientific manuscripts. He is also semi-fluent in both French and Portuguese.
